Tax Types in South Africa: A Practical Guide for Individuals and Businesses
Updated 7 October 2026

The main tax types affecting South African individuals and businesses include personal income tax, corporate income tax, VAT and employees' tax collected through PAYE. Provisional tax is a payment system for income tax, rather than an additional tax.
Which obligations apply depends on how you earn income, your business structure and the activities you carry out. A salary earner, a freelance consultant and a VAT-registered company will not necessarily follow the same filing process.
Which taxes should you understand first?
| Tax or payment system | What it concerns |
|---|---|
| Personal income tax | An individual's taxable income |
| Corporate income tax | A company's taxable income |
| VAT | Taxable supplies by registered vendors |
| PAYE | Employees' tax withheld from remuneration |
| Provisional tax | Income tax paid in advance using estimates |
Personal income tax
Individuals may receive employment income, business income, rental income or investment income. The tax treatment of each amount and any allowable deductions must be considered before calculating taxable income. SARS explains the system on its personal income tax page.
Do not assume that every person earning income must follow an identical filing process. Check the current return requirements and any auto-assessment SARS has issued. Our SARS eFiling guide explains the practical steps.
Corporate income tax
Companies have income tax obligations separate from those of their owners. Reliable accounting records help establish the income, expenses and adjustments relevant to a company return. See SARS corporate income tax guidance.
A small business should not assume that it qualifies for a preferential tax treatment simply because it is small. Check the applicable qualifying requirements before choosing a tax approach.
Value-added tax (VAT)
VAT concerns taxable supplies. It is not a payroll tax. Registered vendors account for output tax and qualifying input tax under the VAT rules.
SARS reports that the compulsory registration threshold increased to R2.3 million and the voluntary threshold to R120,000 from 1 April 2026. Thresholds concern taxable supplies and registration remains subject to the applicable requirements. Existing vendors should check their position rather than stop charging VAT automatically. Read the current SARS VAT guidance.
PAYE and employer administration
PAYE is the mechanism for collecting employees' income tax from remuneration. Employer administration may also involve UIF, SDL and reconciliations where applicable. These obligations need to be considered separately from VAT. Our payroll services guide explains monthly declarations and employer reconciliations.
Provisional tax
Provisional tax spreads income tax payments through the year using estimates. Eligibility and exclusions matter, so receiving non-salary income should prompt a check rather than an assumption. Consult SARS provisional tax guidance for the rules.
Our provisional tax guide explains estimates, IRP6 returns and preparation.
A practical way to organise your tax responsibilities
- List each source of income and identify the taxpayer earning it.
- Check registrations and the returns required for that taxpayer.
- Reconcile financial records before preparing a return.
- Maintain a calendar separating filing dates from payment dates.
- Keep assessments, supporting records and SARS correspondence together.
For example, an owner who receives a salary from a company should keep the company's return, payroll administration and personal return distinct. This is an illustration of the questions to organise, not a determination of an individual's liability.
Frequently asked questions
Is provisional tax an extra tax?
No. It is a system for paying income tax in advance, not a separate additional tax.
Is VAT the same as PAYE?
No. VAT concerns taxable supplies; PAYE concerns employees' tax withheld from remuneration.
